Bretton Woods Picnic (August 29, 1998)Notwithstanding hurricane Bonnie's visit in the Virginia and the Carolina areas during the week, the picnic (for the Marianos, de la Penas and Dionisios hosted by Violy, Vilma Pauig, Linda Serrano, Christine Foz, Cecile de Guzman and Tessie) was held at the Bretton Woods
Country Club (in Germantown, MD). There were some dark clouds but the weather turned out to be nice, free of rain and sunny. The children enjoyed the pool; and Joe Pauig, Tommy Serrano, Butch Samson took Fort for a round of golf. The exquisitely marinated pork and kebab barbecue (prepared by the Pauigs) were superb. Other guests: Remy & Nick Lotuaco (who prepared, on site, a colorful fruit bowl sitting on a circular ice-cooled tray), Linda & Domingo Cenon, Bini & Ramon Bunag (who will be relocating back to the Philippines the coming week) and families of the Pauigs.By popular request (Vilma and Christine primarily), Rudy led the enthusiasts with line dancing, cha cha and tango. (Not to be skipped - the guests who were sitted together at the mahjong table at the Marianos in Chesapeake, they had Round 2 here).
At dusk, some of the picnic goers moved -- to continue the days festivities -- to the
Silver Spring home of the Lotuacos. Highlight of the evening: A "to your hearts content" crab feast dinner (where the kitchen table is covered by layers of newspaper; mounds of steamed crabs -- brought by Joe dela Cruz from Chesapeake -- is placed on the table; and everybody had a "hands only" session with the crabs). The guests who were engaged in Round 2 at Bretton Woods, they had Round 3 after dinner.
* The Metro Manila alumni had a despedida for Vicky (who was leaving for the U.S.) last July. Among those present in the social at the Pascuals were: Remy, Sol, Zeny, Letty, Mat, Lumeng, Estelita, Eli, Romy, and -- of course -- Efren and Vicky.* Into Yamsuan gave a social (on the occasion of his birthday) to friends and families in Cabanatuan last August 16th.

... where even simple things with simple solutions become too complicated to handle. Take for instance the erstwhile already mind-boggling traffic situation. It has become more horrendous since the advent of the rainy season. I cannot help but think that the daily scenario is intentionally well-orchestrated by some vicious performers, i.e., traffic enforcers who vanish from view each time it rains, drivers who believe that they have the vested right to drive through every opening regardless of whether it's for the opposite flow, road contractors with an endless obsession to lessen the road space by timing the repairs during rainy season and abandoning their equipment as perfect road obstructions, other people who are so natural and consistent in clogging the drainage system that eventually result to floods every time it drizzles and numerous generic vehicles of unknown vintage to bog down in the vast parking space that used to be a road. And as a fitting salvo to the perverse symphony, the traffic lights remain devoid of glow for up to when, nobody knows.Meanwhile, some dark clouds are forming thick and fast in the horizon as strong winds blow from nearby regions. The migratory birds of varied plumes that are persuaded to roost in the local jungle have all flown back. Ironically, even the much needed heroes who are based all over the world are left without much options but to fly home with battered nerves, in throngs. But sadly, no fitting monuments are awaiting them. And the weathermen are one in predicting nothing but inclement turbulence and yet the confused and bickering boys who are busy playing the endless loop game seem not to care at all.
If all that is happening around is just a dream, will someone please wake me up?
Summerfest in Chesapeake, VA (August 15, 1998)The annual summerfest was celebrated by a number of out-of-town and in-town guests in the rustic Chesapeake home of Lina and Rudy Mariano. The widely renowned landscaping of the Marianos was typically lush and the greenery highlighted with pink flowers in bloom. Out-of-town guests this year: the Dionisios, Vicky Pascual (who arrived from the Philippines a few weeks ago), dela Penas (with daughter Clarissa and family friends Tessie and Hector), Lotuacos, Vilma & Joe Pauig, Linda & Tommy Serrano, Christine Foz, Rowena Mitch (with daughter Michelle & friend Tessie), Cecile & Raul de Guzman (& children). Some of the in-town guests were Remy & Nick Lotuaco, and the families and friends of the Marianos.
The day started with the traditional picnic and crabbing at the backyard-by-the-bay residence of Jackie and Joe dela Cruz. Tessie and Hector, family friends of the dela Penas brought with them a whole suckling litson. Together with Joe's steamed spicy crabs, other picnic treats and the laid back seaside atmosphere - the afternoon was specially relaxing.
The day's finale, the traditional dinner feast at the Marianos, was another Great! The evening weather was swell, no humidty, nor mosquitoes, and the moon occasionally shows its mien between the clouds. Guests thus enjoyed pleasant conversation and dining out in the house deck, the backyard, and the deck-by-the-lake. The Marianos dinner offering was its usual generous feast (the native desserts by themselves were a rare treat).
A chosen diversion for some during the evening: An engrossing session at the mahjong table for a few hours.
